The I Ching (易經, Yìjīng, literally "Book of Changes") is one of the world's oldest philosophical and divinatory texts, with roots stretching back 3,000 years in Chinese civilisation. Its core structure is elegant: 64 hexagrams (卦, guà), each composed of six stacked lines — whole lines (⚊, Yang, active energy) or broken lines (⚋, Yin, receptive energy) — encoding every possible state of dynamic change and transformation.

The 64 Hexagrams

Each hexagram carries a name, a judgment (彖辭, Tuàncí — the overall verdict), an image commentary (象辭, Xiàngcí) and line-by-line interpretations that have been studied by Confucian scholars, Taoist sages and modern philosophers alike. Hexagram 1 (乾, Qián — Pure Yang, "The Creative") symbolises heaven, strength and initiating energy. Hexagram 2 (坤, Kūn — Pure Yin, "The Receptive") symbolises earth, yielding and nurturing power. Between these two poles lie 62 more hexagrams mapping every nuance of dynamic change in human situations.

Changing Lines

When a hexagram contains "changing lines" — lines in transition from extreme Yin to Yang or vice versa — a second hexagram is produced, showing the situation after the change. This two-hexagram reading gives both "where you are now" and "where things are moving," providing a dual-state insight unavailable in single-card oracles.
