BaZi (八字, literally "Eight Characters") is a Chinese fate-reading system that represents your entire birth moment as four pairs of Chinese characters — one pair for the year, month, day and hour of your birth. Each pair consists of a Heavenly Stem (天干, Tiāngān) and an Earthly Branch (地支, Dìzhī), producing exactly eight characters that encode your elemental profile for life.
Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches
There are 10 Heavenly Stems (甲乙丙丁戊己庚辛壬癸), each mapped to one of the Five Elements (木 Wood, 火 Fire, 土 Earth, 金 Metal, 水 Water) in either Yin (陰) or Yang (陽) polarity. The 12 Earthly Branches (子丑寅卯辰巳午未申酉戌亥) each correspond to one of the 12 zodiac animals and also carry elemental energy. Together, a Stem+Branch pair locks in the elemental quality of a given year, month, day or hour in a 60-year Sexagenary Cycle (六十甲子).
Day Master — Your Core Identity
The Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar is called the Day Master (日主, Rìzhǔ). It is the "self" in BaZi analysis — the element that everything else in your chart is measured against. A 甲 (Jiǎ) Yang Wood Day Master is imaginative, growth-oriented and idealistic. A 庚 (Gēng) Yang Metal Day Master is decisive, direct and reform-minded. Ming Astra identifies your Day Master and explains it in plain language with its element colour, seasonal energy and archetypal traits.
Five Elements Balance
A practitioner's first question is: which element is too strong, which too weak? An excess of Water (壬癸子亥) without balancing Earth can signal restlessness; an absence of Fire may point to low vitality in summer years. Ming Astra computes the elemental count across all eight characters and surfaces the balance as a visual bar chart with plain-language commentary.
Chinese Zodiac Year Animal 生肖
Your birth year also determines your Chinese zodiac animal (生肖, Shēngxiào) — one of 12 in a repeating cycle: Rat 鼠, Ox 牛, Tiger 虎, Rabbit 兔, Dragon 龍, Snake 蛇, Horse 馬, Goat 羊, Monkey 猴, Rooster 雞, Dog 狗, Pig 豬. Each animal carries personality traits and interacts with the current year's animal through harmony (三合 three-harmony), clash (六沖 six-clash) or penalty (刑) relationships — a factor Ming Astra folds into the annual outlook section of your BaZi reading.
Computed, Not Guessed
BaZi calculations in Ming Astra are deterministic: the same birth data always produces the same pillars. Algorithms are verified against authoritative traditional calendars. The AI narration explains the chart; it never invents element counts or pillar values. This reading is for self-reflection and entertainment and does not constitute professional advice of any kind.
