BaZi Four Pillars 四柱命理

BaZi (八字, "Eight Characters") maps your birth year, month, day and hour to four Heavenly Stem–Earthly Branch pairs. Each pillar carries an element (Wood 木, Fire 火, Earth 土, Metal 金, Water 水) and a polarity (Yin 陰 / Yang 陽), producing a unique elemental profile. The balance — or tension — among the five elements reveals strengths, blind spots and which life domains (career, relationships, wealth) are natively favored or challenged. The Day Master 日主 (the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar) is your core identity in BaZi, analogous to the Ascendant in Western astrology.

The Chinese almanac 黃曆 records your birth in the lunisolar calendar — the month and day in the traditional cycle that has governed Chinese festivals and auspicious timing for millennia. Your birth lunar mansion (one of the 二十八宿, 28 star mansions) and the ruling energy of that mansion add an archetypal layer to the reading.

Do I need my exact birth time for a birth chart?
Yes, for full precision. The Ascendant (rising sign) shifts roughly every two hours, and house positions in Western astrology depend entirely on birth time and place. Your BaZi Hour Pillar also requires the birth hour. Without a time, Ming Astra computes a partial reading using noon as a fallback.
What is the Day Master (日主) in BaZi?
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your BaZi Day Pillar — it is considered your core identity, analogous to the Ascendant in Western astrology. For example, a 甲 (Jiǎ) Yang Wood Day Master is associated with growth, leadership and upward aspiration.
How is a birth chart different from a daily horoscope?
The birth chart is a fixed snapshot of the sky at the moment of your birth — it does not change. The daily horoscope tracks how today's moving planets interact with your static birth chart, producing a different reading every day.
